Despite its acclaim and notability, ESPN and its sister networks have been the targets of criticism for some of its programming, including accusations of biased coverage, conflict of interest and controversies with individual broadcasters and analysts. Mike Freeman's 2000 book ''ESPN: The Uncensored History'', which alleged sexual harassment, drug use and gambling, was the first critical study of ESPN.

ESPN has been accused of having a bias towards certain sports teams and a "love affair" with superstar players (such as Tim Tebow; Brett Favre; LeBron James; Kobe Bryant; Dwyane Wade; Derrick Rose; Tom Brady; Stephen Curry; Kemba Walker; Marcus Mariota; Michael Jordan; Jameis Winston; Johnny Manziel; Robert Griffin III; Peyton Manning; Michael Vick; Odell Beckham Jr.; Michael Sam; Jason Collins; Jimmer Fredette; Doug McDermott; Derek Jeter; Alex Rodriguez; Yasiel Puig; Mike Trout; Danica Patrick; Ronda Rousey; David Ortiz; Richard Sherman; Aaron Rodgers; Mo'ne Davis; Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy) and teams (such as the Boston Red Sox; New York Yankees; Los Angeles Dodgers; Chicago Bulls; Miami Heat; Los Angeles Lakers; Cleveland Cavaliers; New England Patriots;Green Bay Packers; Dallas Cowboys; Philadelphia Eagles; Denver Broncos; Seattle Seahawks; Pittsburgh Steelers; New York Jets; USC Trojans; North Carolina Tar Heels; Duke Blue Devils; Alabama Crimson Tide; Notre Dame Fighting Irish (basketball and football); and Ohio State Buckeyes). ESPN's ombudsman, Le Anne Schreiber, responded to these criticisms by saying that the industry is ratings-driven.
Since MLB Network launched on January 1, 2009, ''Baseball Tonight'' has been the target of criticism because of its perceived bias in favor of certain teams such as the Boston Red Sox and the New York teams, in particular. The most vocal comment was expressed by Heath Bell:
